Some Basics about Labrador Retrievers

According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), Labrador Retrievers are friendly, active, and outgoing. But we didn’t need the AKC to tell us that! Out of 193 breeds, Labrador Retrievers are the most popular. Once full grown, Labs rang in height from 22.5 to 24.5 inches for males and from 21.5 and 23.5 inches for females. Males typically weigh between 65 and 80 pounds and females typically weigh between 55 and 70 pounds. Labs are likely to live between 10 and 12 years.

The AKC classifies Labs in the Sporting Group. They state that this group is “naturally active and alert [and they] make likable, well-rounded companions. First developed to work closely with hunters to locate and/or retrieve quarry. There are four basic types of Sporting dogs; spaniels, pointers, retrievers and setters. Known for their superior instincts in water and woods, many of these breeds enjoy hunting and other field activities. Many of them, especially the water-retrieving breeds, have well–insulated water repellent coats, which are quite resilient to the elements.”
